CHAPTER EIGHT

A reply to Ethan’s email arrived overnight, bringing Aunt Gillian’s phone number with it. Ethan’s mother wasn’t even sure the number was right, but Ethan ended up leaving a voicemail for a woman who certainly sounded familiar to him.

Then he hung up and called Marla’s number, wondering who would answer. “Hello there,” Marla said, already sounding seductive. “Any luck?”

“Oh, wow,” Ethan said. “I figured maybe this was Dominic’s number.”

“It’s not expensive to have a separate mobile,” she said. “Besides - caller ID, remember? I figured if it was you calling, you should get to speak to Marla. If you’d prefer to talk to Dominic, I can get him?”

“No, no.” Ethan had a sudden thought. “Uh… how are you dressed?”

Marla gave a throaty chuckle. “Now, I could answer that question in so many ways, couldn’t I?”

Ethan laughed nervously. Perhaps it really was Dominic at the other end of the line, sitting in sweatpants and a t-shirt, speaking to Ethan in a seductive woman’s voice. “Well, I was just wondering.”

“Oh, I know what you were wondering,” Marla said, playfully. “Well, I did just get out of bed. So I’m dressed for bed.”

Various potential outfits flashed through Ethan’s mind. Play it cool. “Oh… pajamas, then?”

Another chuckle. “If that’s what you like.”

“Well, I - ”

“I was thinking perhaps,” she interrupted, “something a little bit more… revealing. Something from a Paris boutique? In lace and silk?”

“That sounds, um, comfortable,” Ethan said, although his mouth felt dry.

“Very. It’s the kind of material that just slides across bedsheets. Sort of like stockings.” Ethan was rapidly becoming aroused, and he had a feeling Marla, or whoever was on the line, knew it. They gave another knowing laugh, and then changed the subject. “You never told me if you spoke to Gillian.”

“Oh… I didn’t. I left a message. It sounded like it was her, though.”

“Well that’s good. She’s probably working. Let’s hope she picks up her messages.”

“Yeah, let’s hope.” He closed his eyes and could see her; a black, nearly see-through negligee, dark stockings, legs crossed as she sat on a small stool next to her phone. Phone cord coiled round her slim fingers.

“Ethan?”

“Uh, yeah? Sorry. I’m here.”

“There will be plenty of time for fantasies later, you know. Realities, too.”

He blushed suddenly, even though he was alone. “Yeah. Sorry. I… well, you started it.”

She laughed again. “I know. Sorry about that. I guess it just comes naturally when I’m dressed like this.” There were those images again.

“Okay, now you’re just provoking me.”

“True. It’s so fun, though.” She cleared her throat, now all business. “Okay. If she calls back, try and arrange to meet her somewhere. Then call me and let me know where.”

“Sure, okay.”

“You don’t sound so sure, Ethan.”

“I was just wondering… I’m just going to go meet her, right? Nothing else?”

“Yes. Something on your mind, Ethan? Just ask.”

“Fine. Will you be there? Wherever we are?”

“I’ll have to be. I can’t train a microphone on her from across a street, or slip a bug in her handbag. So yes, I’ll be there.
